We started Harvest the first week of October, which is common for Oregon - flirting with the rain, checking the brix level every day... patience is required, especially with as much love as has been given to this fruit already. The Vineyard Manager, Luis, has been looking at its crop closely throughout the summer anticipating any needs from the grapes. The production crew was gearing up, waiting, consulting with Alex Sokol Blosser and Luis, still waiting and thinking, "Is it the time? How is the weather? Rain is coming our way…"
The north part of the Concert Block Pinot Noir looked good, so did the Pinot Gris from the Bluebird Block, but we waited until October 1st to begin. When Harvest officially started, people were buzzing and talking, and there was a warm feeling in the air. It was excitement blended with nervousness, since we get one shot at it every year. But the fruit looked great and the 2008 vintage was definitely looking promising.
Harvest went on for few weeks non-stop, Block after Block, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Muller-Thurgau. It was crazy - we are talking about tons of fruit every day! Everyone participated on the sorting table, or supported the Harvest and the hungry production crew by bringing lunch and treats for the occasion. You thought Christmas was exciting? When I looked around, there was an entire team of employees, from the accounting department to direct sales, coming together to celebrate the 2008 Harvest.
The energy was high during the last stretch, and on October 22nd finally all the fruit was “in”. The vineyard can rest now, and with fall here the vineyard leaves look like they are on fire after delivering another one of our famous vintages. I can’t wait for 2010 when this Pinot Noir will be bottled and released.
The Pinot Noir was great, and my first year harvesting at Sokol Blosser was amazing. Our winemaker, Russ Rosner, is taking care of our fruit now that it has made it safely to the Winery. Russ is working his magic…
See you soon at Sokol Blosser Winery for more updates on our 2008 vintage.
